St. Francis Medical Center is hosting a free family health fair on Saturday, August 18, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on its campus located at 3630 E. Imperial Highway in Lynwood.
The fair will feature health screenings for children and adults, including blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, height/weight, body mass index (BMI), vision and hearing, as well as adult immunizations. Education booths will provide information on good habits for a healthy heart, diabetes prevention and management, stroke awareness and prevention, lead poisoning prevention, nutrition and more. Unique to this event will be special presentations on brain health covering topics such as memory disorders and the impact of stroke, diabetes and heart issues on brain function, as well as a case study on the high incidence of Alzheimer’s among people originating from the Jalisco region of Mexico.
“Our health fair directly addresses issues affecting our community, including stroke, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease,” said Eleanor Ramirez, RN, PHN, BSN, MS, Interim President and CEO, St. Francis Medical Center. “Fairs often overlook brain health, but it is key to our quality of life as we age. Our event is entitled ‘Aging Well Family Health Fair’ because we are emphasizing prevention and wellness at every stage of life – it’s never too early or too late to start.”
St. Francis Medical Center is partnering with many businesses and organizations that share its commitment to community health improvement, including Keck School of Medicine of USC, USC Memory and Aging Center, Geriatrics Neurobehavior & Alzheimer’s Center at Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center, Alzheimer’s Greater LA, the Mexican Consulate and LBI Media, Inc. Through their involvement, the hospital hopes to bring even greater visibility to the lifestyle factors that affect a person’s well-being from childhood to adulthood.
A family-friendly event, the health fair will offer free food, raffle prizes, give-aways, a kids’ activity corner with face painting and crafts, music, entertainment and free parking.
“Our ‘Aging Well Family Health Fair’ promises to be a fun, festive event that encourages healthy living and lifestyle choices,” said Ramirez. “We look forward to joining with our local leaders, partner organizations and residents, young and old, to build healthy families and neighborhoods for all of us who call this wonderful community our home.”
