3D Mammography (Breast Imaging)

The Women’s Imaging Center provides comprehensive women’s health services to our community, operating under the St. Francis Medical Center core values of respect and compassion. The Mammography Imaging Service at St. Francis Medical Center is accredited on Quality and Safety by the ACR and certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Public Health Services Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Women’s Imaging Center is on of the first Los Angeles hospitals to offer Breast Tomosynthesis and 3-D digital mammography, the most significant advancement in breast cancer detection in over 30 years. Among the greatest advantages of this new technology is that it offers images with a clarity and degree of detail substantial enough to reduce some of the false-positives and false-negatives associated with 2-D mammographic imaging.

Located in the Health Services Pavilion (terrace level), the Women’s Imaging Center schedules procedures Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Radiology (X-Ray) and Fluoroscopy

Located within the Health Service Pavilion are four general purpose radiography suites and two fluoroscopy suites. X-rays are performed by a digital imaging technique, which minimizes radiation and the need for repeat examinations. Fluoroscopy suites are used to perform a wide array of procedures including esophograms, upper gastrointestinal series, barium enemas, cystograms, voiding cystourethrograms, intravenous pyelograms, arthrograms, myelograms, enteral tube checks, and lumbar punctures. There are two additional general purpose radiography rooms located in the Medical Plaza Building, providing patients the convenience of having radiology services in the same center where laboratory and EKG tests may be performed.Hours for the Medical Plaza Radiography department are Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Computed Tomography (CT)

The CT department utilizes two spiral CT scanners, including a GE Lightspeed VCT 64-slice scanner that performs ultrafast scans in seconds. We can also produce excellent quality angiographic images in less time and with less risk than conventional angiography. CT services are available around the clock for inpatient and emergency services, and for scheduled procedures Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

The MRI department at St. Francis operates a Siemens Magnetom Avanto 1.5 Tesla scanner, which provides revolutionary comfort, an inviting design and audio comfort with up to 97 percent noise reduction compared with earlier units. The scanner excels at non-invasive magnetic resonance angiography, which allows our radiologists and vascular surgeons to make important patient care decisions without the inherent risks of invasive procedures such as conventional angiography. The MRI department schedules procedures Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm and Saturday 7:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The ultrasound imaging services at St. Francis Medical Center is accredited by the ACR for OB, gynecological, general and vascular ultrasound services including peripheral vascular, cerebrovascular, abdominal vascular and deep abdominal vascular examinations. In addition to diagnostic examinations, we provide therapeutic treatments to our patients with procedures such as ultrasound guided biopsy, thoracentesis and abdominal paracentesis. Ultrasound services are available around the clock for inpatient and emergency services, and available for scheduled procedures Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Bone Density Scan (DXA)

DXA is used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that most often affects women after menopause, but may also be found in men. By measuring bone density, the DXA test can assess an individual’s risk for developing fractures. DXA is also effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis.

Interventional Radiology

The Interventional Radiology department has three radiologists with subspecialty fellowship training in interventional radiology. A wide array of vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology procedures are performed utilizing Philips digital angiography units with 3-D and CT capability.

Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine department has three gamma cameras providing a broad array of diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures. Nuclear Medicine services are available around the clock for inpatient and emergency services, and available for scheduled procedures Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Radiation Therapy

The Radiation Therapy department provides radiation treatment through the use of two linear accelerators and Intensity Modulated Radiation Treatment (IMRT), a technology that allows the treatment of tumors using higher doses of radiation while minimizing the negative effects to surrounding tissue. Our radiation oncology services blend technical expertise with a compassionate approach to cancer therapy. Supportive services include pain management, pastoral care, case managers, and home health and hospice referrals.
